How to play
Each puzzle hides a quotation. Every letter of the quotation is also one letter of a clue answer.
- Read the highlighted clue and type its answer. When every letter is in, the game checks it. A right answer fills its letters into the quotation. A wrong one shakes and changes nothing.
- Tap a clue, or a numbered square, to switch clues. On a keyboard, use the up and down arrows.
- Tap the same square again to type its whole word from the quotation instead.
- The first letters of the answers, read down, spell out who said the quotation.
- The clock counts up. Pausing hides the board.
There is a new daily puzzle every day. Once you sign in, you can also build your own puzzle on a topic you choose.
- Free players get 2 builds in any 24 hours. After that, each extra build costs 25 coins, and the game asks you to confirm before it takes them.
- You can start at most 10 builds in any 24 hours. Builds that fail count too.
- Your history shows your latest 10 solved puzzles.
Signing in
- You can play as a guest without signing in. Guest solves stay private, don't earn coins and don't appear on the leaderboard. When you sign in, your guest games move into your account.
- To sign in with email, enter your address and the game emails you a 6-digit code. There is no password. The code works for 10 minutes. If it doesn't arrive, check your spam folder, then ask for a new one. You can ask for 3 codes an hour.
- After 5 wrong tries a code stops working. Ask for a new one.
- On the web and in the iPhone app you can also use Sign in with Apple. If you choose Hide My Email, your account is under Apple's relay address, so use Sign in with Apple again on your other devices.
- The Android app has no Sign in with Apple. If you used Hide My Email, sign in there with your relay address, and the code reaches your usual inbox. Your relay address is in your Apple ID settings under Hide My Email, and in the To line of any email from Crostica.
- You stay signed in for 60 days after you last play.
Coins
- Coins pay for hints. Reveal a letter costs 5 coins and Reveal answer costs 15.
- Coins also pay for extra builds and streak freezes.
- You earn coins the first time you solve a puzzle. Bigger and faster solves earn more, and using hints earns less. Streak milestones earn coins too.
- Coins belong to your account, so you need to sign in to earn or spend them. Your balance is the same on the web and in the app.
- You can't buy coins yet, on the website or in the app. For now you earn them by playing.
Coming later
These aren't on sale yet, and nothing in the game needs them.
- Coin packs are coming to the app in a later version. The website won't sell coins.
- Pro, a subscription, comes later too. It will give 5 builds in any 24 hours, let you start up to 20, and keep your whole history.
Streaks
- Solve the daily puzzle to add a day to your streak. Solving it again the same day adds nothing, and puzzles you build don't count. Guests don't have a streak.
- Milestones pay coins: 10 coins on day 3, 25 on day 7 and 100 on day 30. After that you get 100 coins every 30 days.
- A streak freeze costs 50 coins, and you can hold up to 2. If you miss a day, a freeze covers it for you.
- If you miss more days than you have freezes, the streak breaks and starts again from 1 on your next daily solve. Your best streak and the coins you earned stay with you.
Your account
- In Settings you can choose the name the leaderboard shows, or keep yourself off the leaderboards.
- To delete your account, open Settings, choose Delete account, then Delete everything. That removes your account, email, name, Apple link, games, coins and sessions straight away, on every device. It can't be undone. The privacy policy has the details.
- The terms of service are the rules for playing, coins and accounts.
